The style and technique of these vintage Asian art works follow centuries old conventions in Chinese brush painting. Birds & Flowers, or Insects & Flowers, are quintessential mainstays of traditional Asian art. Chinese paintings owe as much to Taoism as they do to composition and artistry. Each painting is as much an expression of harmony and balance as it is a beautifully painted work of art. Concepts of Yin and Yang are played out in contrast of subject matter; things that can fly freely in the air opposed to those that are rooted firmly to the ground. There is a pull of energy between the two, a contrast of Chi. Each of our vintage silk paintings were originally painted in the mid 20th century and are from the Yangtze River Valley, where dramatic landscapes have inspired Chinese poets and painters for thousands of years. The art is a hand painted watercolor, rendered on silk and mounted on course handmade paper with a brocade fabric boarder. This traditional method of mounting allows the painting to be displayed with or without a frame or matte board.
