Bowls | Home » » » Traditional Buddhist Mala Beads - 9mm- brown sandalwood | | | | | | | Description: | | Beads are a Buddhist tool of meditation. They are moved in rhythm with the breath and mantra of the meditation. The action of moving the beads keeps sleep and distraction at bay and incorporates the whole body in a meditation. Each time the mantra is repeated, the fingers move to the next bead. The mala is meant to focus the mind and promote clear thought about the meaning of the mantra as it is chanted. Schools of thought, from India, to Tibet, to China recommend different ways of holding and counting Mala beads, but these are mostly local idiosyncrasies. However, each meditation should encompass the full cycle of beads. Longer meditations should include additional full cycles, starting at the summit and circling around again to the beginning. Reorient offers sandalwood Mala beads from Guangdong province in China. Each string has 108 beads. | | | Features: | |

beautiful malaJul 16, 2008 First off to the reviewer above...I was also disappointed at first by the lack of 2 spokes on the wheel, but after some research I learned that the wheel actually represents the Bhavacakra, or Wheel of Samsara, which basically symbolizes the six states of existence that are to be transcended. The 2 smaller strings of beads that come out of that are supposed to represent scissors, symbolizing the severing of the wheel of life and death and entry into Nirvana.
Onto the mala...the beads have a lovely smell and the weight is just right. The knotwork is well done and the symbolism is fitting...I think a play on traditional Amidist nenju. All in all I am very happy with this mala, and it has become a part of myself and my practice, and just holding it makes me feel closer to the Dharma...highly recommended.

Kind of upsetting...Jun 05, 2008 Necklace is well made, and it smells good. There was only one problem for me - It doesn't really show the eightfold path symbol, as there are only six paths illustrated on the pendant. If you are creative, however, you can pass of 2 of the "paths" as 4, since they are outlines. But still, a little upsetting...
