Description:

These are the original Tai Chi figurines from Shiwan, Foshan China in Guangdong province. They were produced at the Shiwan Artistic Ceramic Factory where ceramic figurines have been hand crafted since early in the Qing Dynasty (1644 to 1912). Originally created as temple decorations, Shiwan figurines became popular in the West in the 18th century and have been export artifacts ever since. The city of Shiwan is famous for artistic hand crafted ceramics including vases, tiles and figurines. Many of the colorful glazes and craft techniques used throughout China today originated in Shiwan during the Tang dynasty (618 to 907AD). As is typical with figurines from the Shiwan Artistic Ceramic Factory, no glaze is applied to the face of the Tai Chi figures. Shiwan ceramics are highly collectible and capture the culture, history and folklore of China. This Tai Chi figurine set is a tribute to the enduring form of meditation and exercise that has become popular all around the world. Yield and Overcome; Be Straight yet Bend, these are sayings from Taoism that are the basis of Tai Chi. There are many different schools of Tai Chi, yet they all have the same philosophical origin in Taoism, rooted in the 6th century BC.

5A fine collection of Tai Chi figuresJan 31, 2010
Well crafted, arrived well packed and protected. A good representation of Tai Chi poses. I have them displayed in my living room. They inspire me to do well in all things pursued.
I have done all the poses they are in. Tai Chi is timeless and these figures show that perfectly. I am happy with the buy.

4Tai Chi FiguresMay 24, 2009
These Tai Chi figures are great overall. They are made of ceramic and very sturdy. They show the various Tai Chi moves. I always wanted to try Tai Chi, but so far I haven't had a chance. Maybe when I retire. All of the figures are Asian men which I don't like. There should be at least one woman too, just like in the Supreme Court. Also, there should be better representation of the various ethnic groups: a Caucasian, an African/African-American, a Hispanic, and of course, an Asian. If there were more figures, some of the other ethic groups could be represented such as the Native American. So, if the lack of diversity doesn't bother you, these figures would make a great addition to your collection of Tai Chi figures.
