Like a Chinese watercolor this stone sculpture represents the natural beauty of the Chinese countryside. It also plays to the Oriental philosophy of Taoism. It is common in traditional water color paintings of Asia to see depictions of natural elements such as animals and plants, birds and flowers, or insects and flowers. To the western eye it looks like a nature painting. But there is a deeper level. Taoist thought sees balance in all things, the Yin and the Yang. With most nature paintings there is interplay between the plants, which are bound to the earth, and the animals or insects which roam freely unbound. In this stone statue, the Yang is represented by the rock (mountain) and bamboo grove, while the free flowing energy of the Yin is represented by the bears, seated comfortably at the base.
