The delicate fragility of a flower is carved from hard stone and incorporated into the body of this hand carved soapstone vase. While a functional work of art, it is also an exercise in Taoist thought. The hard cold of stone is balanced by the soft warmth of the flowers that will be held by the bud vase. It is an embodiment of the ancient philosophy of Taoism that spread throughout the Orient and is the basis for such schools of thought as Zen and Feng Shui. The word for "vase" in Chinese is also a homonym for "peace" and so as a gift it is meant to resemble peacefulness and friendship.
