Longevity tortoise - hand carved from solid wood
In the orient, most notablely in China and Japan, the tortoise is seen as a symbol of longevity. As one of the five guardians of the compass the turtle or tortoise also represents North. The Dragon is East, the Phoenix is South, and the White tiger is West. The fifth direction, China, is the center. In Chinese myth there is a correlation between the compass and the seasons. The Tortoise represents winter, while the Dragon is the Green of Spring, the Phoenix is the Fire red of summer, and the Tiger represents autumn. It is said that when a tortoise lives to be 1,000 years old, it can speak and foretell the future. Giving a turtle as a gift is a wish for long life and happiness to the recipient.
