This fine deer statue is carved from genuine jade. In Chinese arts the deer is considered a symbol of longevity and prosperity. The art work is actually two pieces as the mother deer has a fawn on her back, which acts as a lid to a small carved out space in the jade. The two deer together symbolize a double wish for prosperity and longevity. A custom made wooden stand also accompanies this jade carving. Stones classified as jade are actually two different minerals, Jadeite and Nephrite. They exhibit very similar characteristics, and it wasn't until the 1800s that geologist discovered that there were in fact two different stones. The difference is in the crystal structure and is not immediately apparent by the eye alone, however both are still considered jade by gemologist. Early Chinese Dynasties demanded tribute payments be made in jade and the raw stones, once collected, were carved into elaborated and decorative works of art.
