Porcelain | Home » » Happy Buddha - black | | | | | | | Description: | | The Buddha is depicted differently in each culture that embraced the ancient religion and philosophy. In China the Buddha is most often seen as a fat happy man, draped in robes with large ear lobes. The legend of Pu Tai, a Buddhist monk who spread Buddhist thought during the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907) may have been the model. He was extremely kind and jovial and since he was the source of Buddhism for many people, his likeness may also be the source of the happy Buddha that is so common in China. This rendition is carved from black Qingtian cave stone. Each statuette is individually hand carved, so no two are identical. Each has details such as long ear lopes, which represent long life, and the Mala beads clutched in the Buddha's hand. Collectors of Oriental art will appreciate the authentic style and prized material of black Qingtian stone. | | | Features: | |
