The title of this one of a kind original watercolor is The Song of the Shepherd, as inscribed in Chinese characters along the top of the painting. The rice paper painting pays tribute to the history and folklore of Chinas West. Minority cultures of the region are known for unique musical creations including throat singing and the stringed Dombra. The animals in the painting appear to be Tibetan antelope. They are mostly wild but some are domesticated. Tibetan antelope are a threatened species, widely poached for valuable skins and wool. By pairing the shepherdess with these endangered animals, the artist makes a comment on Chinas disappearing traditions. The sharp detail of the inks and sparse use of vibrant colors creates an evocative scene. Rather than stage an abject protest, the painting merely seeks to make record of fading customs and prompts you to ask yourself if this is the right path for civilization to take.
